This Identify Intercepts Worksheet/Game is a great way to put your skills to the test in a fun environment. By practicing, you’ll start to work out the answers efficiently.
Identify Intercepts Worksheet/Game
Welcome to Identify Intercepts Worksheet/Game. This game is designed to help you learn how to find where a line crosses the x-axis (the x-intercept) or y-axis (the y-intercept). The linear equation is given in Standard Form. Scroll down the page for a more detailed explanation.
Analyze the Equation
At the top of the card, you will see a linear equation in Standard Form, like 3x + 2y = 12.
Identify the Target Intercept
Read the question prompt below the equation. It will ask for one of two things:
The x-intercept: This is where the line hits the horizontal axis.
The y-intercept: This is where the line hits the vertical axis.
Solve Algebraically
Use the “Substitution Rule” to find your answer:
To find the x-intercept: Set y = 0. In your head (or on paper), remove the y term and solve for x.
Example: In 3x + 2y = 12, you solve 3x = 12. The answer is 4.
To find the y-intercept: Set x = 0. Remove the x term and solve for y.
Example: In 3x + 2y = 12, you solve 2y = 12. The answer is 6.
Enter and Submit
Type your numerical answer into the box and click Submit.
Green Feedback: You got it right! Your score increases, and the game will move to the next question automatically after a second.
Red Feedback: Not quite! A Hint button will appear. Click it to see the step-by-step substitution and division needed to find the correct value.
Reach the Finish Line
The game consists of 30 randomized questions. Once you finish the “deck,” you’ll reach the End Screen, which shows your final accuracy (Total Correct vs. Total Attempts).
What are Intercepts?
x-intercept: The point where the graph crosses the x-axis. At this exact point, the y-coordinate is always 0. It is written as (x, 0).
y-intercept: The point where the graph crosses the y-axis. At this exact point, the x-coordinate is always 0. It is written as (0, y).
How to Find Intercepts Algebraically
To find the intercepts from an equation (like 2x + 4y = 8), you use the Substitution Method.
Finding the x-intercept (Set y = 0)
Replace y with 0 in the equation.
Solve for x.
Example: 2x + 4(0) = 8
2x = 8 → x = 4
The x-intercept is (4, 0).
Finding the y-intercept (Set x = 0)
Replace x with 0 in the equation.
Solve for y.
Example: 2(0) + 4y = 8
4y = 8 → y = 2
The y-intercept is (0, 2).
The “Cover-Up” Method
If an equation is in Standard Form (Ax + By = C), you can use a mental shortcut. Since one variable will become zero, you can simply “cover up” the term you aren’t looking for with your thumb.
To find x: Cover the y term and solve what’s left.
To find y: Cover the x term and solve what’s left.
Special Cases
Horizontal Lines (y = k): These lines only have a y-intercept (at k) and no x-intercept (unless the line is the x-axis itself).
Vertical Lines (x = h): These lines only have an x-intercept (at h) and no y-intercept (unless the line is the y-axis itself).
