Graph Absolute Value Inequality Game
Practice matching solved absolute value inequalities to their correct number line graphs. Free interactive math game with step-by-step solutions for Algebra 1 & 2 students. Scroll down the page for a more detailed explanation.

How to Play the Game
Goal
Solve multi-step absolute value inequalities by selecting the correct compound inequality type (AND vs OR) and determining the boundary limits for x.

Step-by-Step Instructions
Objective
Match the given absolute value inequality to its correct solution set represented on a number line graph.

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Examine the Target Inequality: Read the expression displayed at the top of the card (e.g., |x - 2| ≤ 5).
  2. Solve the Inequality:
Determine whether the solution forms a bounded interval (shaded between two points) or two disjoint rays (shaded outwards).
Calculate the boundary endpoint numbers on the number line.
Identify whether the endpoints should be open circles (< or >) or closed circles (≤ or ≥).
  3. Select Your Answer: Click on option A, B, C, or D that displays the matching number line graph.Review Solution & Feedback:
If correct, you’ll earn points and hear a triumph chime.
If incorrect, read the step-by-step breakdown explaining how to solve and graph the inequality correctly.
  4. Advance: Click Next Question to continue building your score and accuracy percentage.

Educational Summary
Overview & Core Concepts
Absolute value inequalities are fundamental to middle and high school algebra. They bridge symbolic algebraic solving with visual, geometric representations on a one-dimensional coordinate system (the number line).
This game reinforces the geometric interpretation of absolute value as distance:
Distance Within Bound (|x - c| < r): Represents all numbers whose distance from a center point c is less than radius r. Graphically, this forms a bounded segment between c - r and c + r (“AND” compound inequality).
Distance Beyond Bound (|x - c| > r): Represents all numbers whose distance from center point c is greater than radius r. Graphically, this forms two infinite rays pointing outwards from c - r and c + r (“OR” compound inequality).

Target Grade Levels & Courses
Grades: 8th Grade – 11th Grade
Courses: Pre-Algebra, Algebra 1, Algebra 2, Integrated Math I/II

Learning Objectives
By playing this game, students will:

  1. Translate symbolic absolute value inequalities into equivalent compound linear inequalities.
  2. Distinguish between strict (<, >) and non-strict (≤, ≥) boundaries using open and closed circle representations.
  3. Identify the visual difference between conjunctions (“AND” / inner interval) and disjunctions (“OR” / outer rays).
  4. Build fluency in multi-step inequality solving across varied difficulty levels.

Teacher’s Guide & Lesson Integration
Classroom Integration Strategies

  1. Warm-Up / Bell Ringer (5–10 Minutes):
Project the game on a smartboard. Have students solve the target inequality on individual mini-whiteboards and hold up their answers before selecting the choice on screen.
  2. Differentiated Station Activity:
Group students based on their current skill tier and assign specific difficulty settings in the game:
Easy Tier: Focuses on |x| \text{ op } a. Perfect for introducing distance from zero, circle inclusion, and direction of shading.
Medium Tier: Focuses on |x - h| \text{ op } a. Great for practicing horizontal translations and identifying the midpoint/radius of the graph.
Hard Tier: Focuses on |ax + b| \text{ op } c. Designed for advanced students mastering multi-step algebraic operations before graphing.
  3. Formative Assessment & Exit Tickets:
Have students complete 10 questions at their target level and capture a screenshot of their final Score and Accuracy Percentage.
