This game, “Dot Hunter,” is designed to help learners count dots from 1 to 9. Dot Hunter is more than just a counting game; it is a foundational tool for developing number sense. By asking learners to look at dots and choose the corresponding digit, the game bridges the gap between a physical quantity and a mathematical symbol.

How to Play the Dot Hunter Game
The game will show a set of objects. Your task is to count them.
Here’s how to play:

  1. When ready to play, click on “Start Hunting”.
  2. Count the dots on the card, then pick the right number.
  3. If you choose the correct number, it will become green. If you choose the wrong number, it will become red and the correct card will become green.
Your score is tracked at the top, showing how many you’ve gotten right out of the total you’ve tried.
  4. Click “Exit to Menu” to restart the game.

Here is how the game specifically aids different stages of learning:

  1. Developing Perceptual Subitizing
Subitizing is the ability to recognize a small group of objects instantly without counting them one by one.
The Benefit: Most humans can subitize up to 4 objects. The game trains the brain to “see” 3 dots and immediately know it’s “3” without using fingers to count.
Long-term Skill: This is a vital precursor to mental math and higher-level arithmetic.

  2. Encouraging Conceptual Subitizing
For numbers larger than 5, the brain begins to “chunk” information. A learner might see 7 dots as a group of 4 and a group of 3.
The Benefit: Because the dots in Dot Hunter are randomized and not in standard dice patterns, learners cannot rely on memory. They must mentally organize the dots into smaller, manageable groups.
    Math Connection: This directly prepares them for addition (e.g., 4 + 3 = 7).

  3. Strengthening One-to-One Correspondence
If a learner isn’t ready to subitize, they will use counting.

  4. Direct Symbol Mapping
The final step of the game is selecting the digit.
The Benefit: It forces the learner to connect the quantity they just counted to the visual numeral.
Corrective Loop: If they count 6 dots but click the number “9,” the game’s feedback system immediately highlights the correct digit. This instant correction prevents the learner from reinforcing an incorrect association.

    Summary of Skills
Number Sense: Connects quantity (dots) to symbols (digits).
Accuracy: Teaches precise counting through immediate feedback.
Fluency: Repeated play increases the speed of recognition.
Focus: Randomized dot placement requires active attention.
