Customary Volume Conversion Game
In this Customary Volume Conversion Game, students must need to convert between the three standard US Customary units of volume: Cups (c), Pints (pt), Quarts (qt), and Gallons (gal). Scroll down for a detailed explanation.

How to Play the Customary Volume Conversion Game

  1. Choose Your Mode
Before you start, select one of the two buttons at the top:

Mode 1: Whole Numbers Only
The Logic: This mode only asks you to convert from a larger unit to a smaller unit (e.g., Gallons to Quarts).
The Math: You will always be multiplying. Because you are breaking big containers into smaller ones, your answer will always be a whole number.

Mode 2: Fractions Allowed
The Logic: This mode introduces small-to-large conversions (e.g., Cups to Pints).
The Math: You will often need to divide. If the smaller units don’t make a full large unit, you must enter a fraction (like 1/2 or 1/4).

  1. The Conversion Rules
To calculate your answer, keep these numbers in mind:

    Relationship Ratio Math Tip
Gallon (gal) to Quarts (qt) 1:4 Multiply by 4 (or divide by 4)
Quart (qt) to Pints (pt) 1:2 Multiply by 2 (or divide by 2)
Pint (pt) to Cups (c) 1:2 Multiply by 2 (or divide by 2)
  2. Entering “Fraction” Answers
If you are in Mode 2, follow these strict rules to get the “Perfect Pour” feedback:
Simplify: The game checks for the simplest form. If the answer is 2/4, you must enter 1/2 to get points.
    Formatting:
Proper Fractions: Use a forward slash (e.g., 3/4).
Mixed Numbers: Type the whole number, a space, and then the fraction (e.g., 1 1/2).
Decimals: You can also type 0.5, though practicing the fractions is better for your score.

The following diagram shows a visual mnemonic called “The Big G” to remember the relationships between gallons, quarts, pints, and cups.
