Consonant Digraph Worksheet/Game
Welcome to Consonant Digraph Worksheet/Game. This is a phonics game designed to help you master five important consonant digraphs sounds: ch, sh, th, ph, and wh. Scroll down the page for a more detailed explanation.
Observe the Clues
In the center of the screen, you will see a large Emoji and a Word with a missing piece (a dashed box with a question mark).
The Emoji gives you a visual hint of what the word is (e.g., 🧀 for “cheese”).
The Word Display shows where the missing sound belongs—either at the start (like ip) or the end (like fi).
Choose the Correct Digraph
At the bottom of the screen are four colored buttons. Each one represents a different sound:
ch (like cheese or peach)
sh (like shoe or fish)
th (like thumb or math)
wh (like whale or wheel)
ph (like phone or elephant)
Check Your Result
If you are correct: The box will turn green, the missing letters will appear, and your computer will speak the word out loud to help you hear the sound! You also earn 10 points.
If you are incorrect: You will hear a low “oops” sound, and the feedback bar will tell you to try again. Don’t worry—you can keep trying until you find the right one!
Keep Going
Once you solve a word, click the big “NEXT WORD ➔” button to get a new challenge. The game uses a “shuffled deck” system, meaning you will get to practice every single word in the bank before any of them repeat.
Tip for Learners
If you aren’t sure which one to pick, try saying the word out loud with each sound:
Does it sound like sh-eese? (No)
Does it sound like th-eese? (No)
Does it sound like ch-eese? (Yes!)
Consonant Digraphs
A consonant digraph is a specific combination of two consonants that come together to create one single, unique sound.
The word “digraph” comes from “di” (meaning two) and “graph” (meaning written). In phonics, this means two letters are written, but only one phoneme (sound) is heard. This is different from a consonant blend (like bl or str), where you can still hear the individual sound of each letter.
Common “H-Brothers” Digraphs
The most frequent digraphs in English usually involve the letter h. These are often the first ones taught to primary students.
sh (The “Quiet” sound): Found in ship, dish, and shoe.
ch (The “Train” sound): Found in chair, lunch, and chick.
th (The “Tongue-to-Teeth” sound):
Unvoiced: thumb, bath (just air).
Voiced: that, mother (throat vibrates).
wh (The “Whistling” sound): Found in whale and wheel.
ph (The “f” sound): Found in phone and graph.
Other Important Digraphs
Digraphs don’t always use the letter h. Some appear only at the end of words or syllables.
ck: Makes the /k/ sound. Usually follows a short vowel. (Example: back, lock).
kn: The “k” is silent. (Example: knee, knife).
wr: The “w” is silent. (Example: write, wrist).
ng: A nasal sound often found at the end of words. (Example: sing, ring).
gn: The “g” is silent. (Example: gnat, sign).
Digraphs vs. Blends: The Difference
It is common for learners to confuse digraphs with blends. Here is how to tell them apart:
|Type|Definition|Example|Sound Breakdown|
|:–|:–|:–|
|Digraph|2 letters = 1 sound|ship|/sh/ /i/ /p/ (3 sounds)|
|Blend|2 letters = 2 sounds|stop/s/ /t/ /o/ /p/ (4 sound)|
