Coin Exchange Game
This Coin Exchange Game is a great way to learn how different coins relate to one another. The goal is to figure out how many “small” coins you need to equal the value of a “large” coin (or a group of large coins). Scroll down for a detailed explanation.
How to Play the Coin Exchange Game
Step 1: Choose Your Coins
When you open the game, you will see a “Clean Slate.” All the coins are gray because none are selected yet.
To Activate: Click on the coins you want to practice with. When you click one, it will turn vibrant purple.
The Rule: You must select at least two different coins (like Pennies and Dimes) so the game has something to compare.
Step 2: Understand the Challenge
Once you click “Start Trading,” the game will present a question in the purple box. It will look like this:
“How many nickels make a single quarter?"
To solve this, you need to know the values of each coin:
Penny: 1¢
Nickel: 5¢
Dime: 10¢
Quarter: 25¢
Step 3: Do the “Exchange Math”
Think of the larger coin as a target number. You need to “skip-count” using the smaller coin until you hit that target.
Example: Nickels to Quarter
Target = 25¢ (the Quarter).
Count by 5s (the Nickels): 5, 10, 15, 20, 25.
How many numbers did you say? 5
Step 4: Check
Type your answer into the box and click “Check Answer."

The Challenge
The game displays this question in the purple box:
“How many nickels make a single quarter?"
Step 1: Know Your Values
First, identify the “target” value of the large coin and the “counting” value of the small coin:
Target (Quarter): 25¢
Small Coin (Nickel): 5¢
Step 2: Skip-Count to the Target
Use your fingers or count out loud by 5s until you hit 25:
“5” (1 nickel)
“10” (2 nickels)
“15” (3 nickels)
“20” (4 nickels)
“25” (5 nickels)
Step 3: Enter and Check
Type 5 into the answer box.
Click “Check Answer."
Advanced Example: Multiples
Sometimes the game will challenge you with more than one large coin:
“How many dimes make 2 quarters?"
Find the new target: One quarter is 25¢, so two quarters are 25 + 25 = 50¢.
Count by Dimes (10¢}): 10, 20, 30, 40, 50.
Count the steps: It took 5 dimes to reach 50¢.
