Add km and m Game
This Add km and m Game focuses on adding mixed metric units of km and m. The goal is to teach students how to combine kilometers and meters by regrouping (carrying over) every time they hit 1,000 meters. Scroll down for a detailed explanation.

How to Play the Add km and m Game

  1. Read the Distances
The game displays two distances in the center of the screen, broken down into Kilometers (km) and Meters (m).
    Example: 2 km 450 m + 1 km 800 m.

  2. Add the Units
You need to enter the total distance into the two input boxes at the bottom.
The Meters Column: Add the meters first.
The Kilometers Column: Add the kilometers next.

  3. Master the “Carry Over” (Regrouping)
This is the most important part of the addition.
    1,000 meters} = 1 kilometer
If your meters total 1,000 or more:
Subtract 1,000 from your meters total.
Add 1 to your kilometers total as a “carry over."

  4. Check Your Total
Click “Check Total” to see if your math is correct.
Success: You’ll hear a bright chord and see “Perfect Navigation!” Click “Next Route” to keep going.
Mistake: You’ll hear a low tone and get a hint to check your regrouping. You can try again immediately.

Example
If the game gives you:
Route A: 3 km 600 m
Route B: 2 km 700 m

Step 1: Add the meters: 600 + 700 = 1,300 m.
Step 2: Since 1,300 is more than 1,000, take 1,000 away. You are left with 300 m.
Step 3: Carry that 1,000 m} over as 1 km.
Step 4: Add the kilometers: 3 + 2 + 1 (carry) = 6 km.
Your Final Answer: 6 km 300 m.

Tips
Watch the Thousands: If your meters addition results in a 4-digit number (like 1,150), that leading “1” always moves over to the km box.
Mental Math: Try adding the meters in your head by looking at the hundreds place first.
