In these lessons, we help Grade 3 students learn 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional (2D and 3D) shapes. In third grade, students begin to solidify their understanding of basic geometric shapes, differentiating between two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) forms.
For Grade 3 students, learning about 2D and 3D shapes is an exciting introduction to geometry. At this level, the focus is on recognizing shapes, understanding their properties, and differentiating between 2D (flat) and 3D (solid) shapes.
The following diagram shows some 2-dimensional shapes. Scroll down the page for more examples of 2-dimensional shapes.

2D Shapes (Two-Dimensional Shapes)
2D shapes are flat shapes that have only length and width. They lie on a plane and have area but no volume. They are flat and can be drawn on a piece of paper.
Common 2D Shapes
3D Shapes (Three-Dimensional Shapes)
3D shapes are solid shapes that have length, width, and height. They occupy space and have volume.
Common 3D Shapes
