Students can use addition strategies like counting fingers, counting on, number bonds or mental math. They may also write the problems in a vertical form. With practice, they may be able to do the sums in their heads.

How to add a 2-digit number and a 1-digit number with regrouping:

1. Line Up the Numbers:
Write the numbers vertically, aligning their place values (tens and ones).
Start by adding the digits in the ones place.
If the sum is 10 or more, you’ll need to regroup (carry over).
Write the ones digit of the sum below the ones place column.
Carry over the tens digit of the sum to the tens place.
Add the tens digit of the 2-digit number, the carried-over digit (if any), and the 0 in the tens place of the 1-digit number.
Write the sum below the tens place column.
