Words to Expressions Game
This game is a comprehensive tool designed to help you master the translation of English phrases into algebraic logic. Scroll down the page for a more detailed explanation.

How to Play the Words to Expressions Game

  1. Choosing Your Difficulty
When you launch the game, you’ll be presented with two distinct paths:
Easy (Multiple Choice): You are given four expressions. One is correct, and the others are common “trap” answers (like wrong order or wrong operation). This is great for learning to spot common mistakes.
Hard (Type it in!): You must use your keyboard to write the expression from scratch. There are no hints, and you must be precise with your symbols and order.

  2. The Language of Operations
To win, you need to recognize the “trigger words” that tell you which mathematical symbol to use:
Operation Trigger Words Math Example
Addition (+) sum, more than, increased by, total "Sum of x and 5" → x + 5
Subtraction (-) difference, less than, decreased by "Difference of x and 3" → x - 3
Multiplication (×) product, twice (2), triple (3) "Product of 4 and y" → 4y
Division (/) quotient, ratio, half, divided by "Quotient of z and 2" → z/2

  1. Hard Mode Syntax
Here is how to type your answers:
Exponents: Use the ^ symbol. For “x squared,” type x^2.
Division: Use the forward slash /. For “k divided by 3,” type k/3.
Multiplication: You can type 4*x or just 4x.
Parentheses: Essential for grouping. If you see “Twice the sum of…”, you must type 2(x+5).

  2. Watch Out for Turn-Around Words
The game is specifically designed to catch you on subtraction order. In English, we sometimes say the number we are taking away first.
The Phrase: “8 less than w”
The Logic: You start with w and remove 8.
    Correct Answer: w - 8
Incorrect Answer: 8 - w (This is the most common mistake in the game)

  3. Scoring and Results
The Score Counter at the top tracks your progress (Correct / Total played).

Step-by-Step Translation Strategy
If you have a long phrase, follow these steps:
Step 1 Identify the Variable: Look for “a number” or a specific letter (x, n, y).
Step 2 Circle the Operators: Find words like “times,” “sum,” or “less than."
Step 3 Check for Order: Is there a “turn-around” word?
Step 4 Write the Expression: Assemble the parts like a puzzle.

The video gives a clear, step-by-step approach to write algebraic expressions.
