A number sentence is a mathematical equation or inequality that involves numbers and symbols (like +, -, =, ≠) and can be proven true or false. Writing a number sentence from a word problem involves three main steps: identifying the operation, extracting the relevant numbers, and placing them correctly into the equation format.
Identify the Operation (Addition or Subtraction
The first and most crucial step is determining the action of the problem by looking for key words and phrases.
A. If the Problem is Addition (+)
The goal is to find the total, the sum, or to combine two or more groups.
B. If the Problem is Subtraction (-)
The goal is to find the difference, the remainder, or how much is left after removal.
Extract Numbers and Identify the Unknown
Read the problem again to pull out all the numerical values and determine what part of the equation is missing (the unknown).
Knowns: The numbers given in the problem.
Unknown: The number you need to solve for.
Write the Number Sentence
The structure of the number sentence depends on the operation and which part is the unknown.
Example: Addition (Finding the Total)
