How to play the Telling Time Game

  1. Choose Your Challenge
When you launch the game, you start at the Main Menu. You must select a level based on your current skill:
Level 1 (Hours & Half-Hours): Focuses on the basics. The big hand (minute hand) will only ever point at the 12 (o’clock) or the 6 (half past).
Level 2 (Quarters): Adds complexity. The big hand can now point at the 3 (quarter past) or the 9 (quarter to).

  2. Identify the Hands
Once the game starts, look at the clock in the center. It uses two distinct hands:
The Big Orange Hand (Minute Hand): This tells you how many minutes have passed in the hour.
The Short Dark Hand (Hour Hand): This tells you which hour you are in.

Tip: In this game, the hour hand is realistic. If the time is “Half past 4,” the hour hand will be halfway between the 4 and the 5. If it is “Quarter to 11,” the hour hand will be almost touching the 11.

  1. Reading the “Quarter” Milestones
The game uses traditional English phrasing.

Use this cheat sheet to help you:

If the Orange Hand is on… The phrase is…
12 …o’clock
3 Quarter past…
6 Half past…
9 Quarter to [Next Hour]
