Telling Time to the Half Hour Worksheet/Game
Welcome to Telling Time to the Half Hour Worksheet/Game. This game is an interactive educational game designed to help students master reading an analog clock and matching it to a digital time format. It focuses on the primary grade standards of telling time to the hour and half-hour. Scroll down the page for a more detailed explanation.
Game Objective
Look at the positions of the two clock hands and select the button that shows the matching digital time.
How to play the Telling Time to the Half Hour Worksheet/Game
Identify the Hands:
The Hour Hand (Short & Black): This hand tells you the hour.
The Minute Hand (Long & Red): This hand tells you the minutes.
Read the Time:
On the Hour: If the red hand points to the 12, the time ends in :00 (e.g., 4:00).
Half-Past: If the red hand points to the 6, the time ends in :30 (e.g., 4:30).
Tip: When it is :30, the short black hand will be halfway between two numbers. Always look at the number it just passed.
Make Your Choice:
Tap one of the four white buttons at the bottom.
Correct: The button turns green and the game speaks the time out loud. After a short pause, a new clock will appear.
Try Again: If you pick the wrong time, the button will fade out. Look back at the clock hands and try again.
Educational Strategy: Visual Learning
This game uses specific visual cues to make learning easier for students:
Color Coding: Using a distinct red for the minute hand helps students distinguish it from the black hour hand.
The “Half-Past” Logic: One of the biggest challenges for first graders is understanding why the hour hand isn’t perfectly on a number at :30. This game realistically offsets the hour hand by $15^{\circ}$ when the time is at the half-hour mark, helping students learn that the hour hand “travels” between numbers.
Audio Reinforcement: Hearing the time spoken helps bridge the gap between seeing the numbers and understanding the concept of “o’clock” and “thirty."
