Understanding Systems of Equations Word Problems
A System of Equations is a set of two or more equations that share the same variables. In word problems, your goal is to translate a narrative into a mathematical structure to find where two conditions overlap.
The 4-Step Strategy
Step 1: Define Your Variables
Identify what you are looking for. Assign letters to these unknowns.
Example: Let x = price of an adult ticket, y = price of a child ticket.
Step 2: Translate the Sentences into Equations
Look for “indicator words” that signal mathematical operations:
“Is”, “Was”, “Equals”, “Total” \(\rightarrow =\)
“More than”, “Sum”, “Combined” \(\rightarrow +\)
“Difference”, “Less than”, “Fewer” \(\rightarrow -\)
“Times”, “Product”, “Twice” \(\rightarrow \times\)
Step 3: Choose a Solving Method
Substitution: Best if one equation already has a variable isolated (e.g., y = 2x + 5).
Elimination: Best if both equations are in standard form (Ax + By = C) and you can easily cancel out one variable by adding or subtracting the equations.
Step 4: Interpret the Result
Once you solve for x and y, plug them back into the context of the story to ensure they make sense.
Common Problem Types
Type A: The “Total and Difference”
These involve a total sum and a comparison between two items.
Story: “A total of 20 animals are on a farm. There are 6 more cows than pigs."
