System of Equations (Substitution)

Examples, solutions, videos, and worksheets to help Grade 7 and Grade 8 solve a system of linear equations using substitution. Identify when the two lines are parallel and there is no solution. Identify when the two lines are the same line and there are infinite number of solutions. One can verify that two lines are parallel by comparing their slopes and their y-intercept points.

How to solve System of Equations using Substitution?

Substitution is a method to solve systems of linear equations by expressing one variable in terms of the other and substituting it into the other equation.

Steps:

  1. Solve one equation for one variable: Choose one of the equations and isolate one variable.
  2. Substitute the expression: Substitute the expression you obtained in step 1 into the other equation.
  3. Solve the resulting equation: Solve the equation for the remaining variable.
  4. Substitute the value back: Substitute the value you found in step 3 into one of the original equations to find the value of the other variable.
