    How to Subtract Whole Tens
    Subtract Whole Tens

Step 1: Think in Groups of Ten
When you have a subtraction problem involving whole tens (like 90−40), you can temporarily ignore the zeros and focus only on the tens digit.
    90 is 9 tens.
    40 is 4 tens.
The problem becomes a simple single-digit subtraction:
    9 tens − 4 tens = __tens

Step 2: Solve the Basic Subtraction
Solve the subtraction problem using the tens digits:
    9−4=5
This tells you the answer will be 5 tens.

Step 3: Convert Back to the Whole Number
The final step is to convert the tens count back into its whole number form.
5 tens is equal to 50.
    So, the final answer is:
    90−40=50
