How to subtract a whole ten from a 3-digit number
Method 1: Mental Math (When No Regrouping is Needed)
This method is the fastest when the Tens digit in the 3-digit number is equal to or greater than the Tens digit you are subtracting.
Example: 583−30

  1. Identify the Tens: Look at the Tens column in both numbers.
    583 has 8 tens.
    30 has 3 tens.
  2. Ignore the Hundreds and Ones: The Hundreds digit (5) and the Ones digit (3) stay the same. You just need to subtract the tens: 8 tens −3 tens =5 tens.
  3. Combine and Solve: The new Tens digit is 5.
    The answer is 553.
    So, 583−30=553

Method 2: Standard Algorithm (When Regrouping is Needed)
This method is necessary when the Tens digit in the 3-digit number is smaller than the Tens digit you are subtracting. You must “borrow” from the Hundreds place.

  1. Set Up and Subtract the Ones: Write the numbers vertically.
  2. Subtract the Tens and Regroup.

The key takeaway is that when you subtract a whole ten, the action is entirely in the Tens column, but sometimes that action forces a change in the Hundreds column (regrouping).
