Repeating Patterns Worksheet/Game
Welcome to Repeating Patterns Worksheet/Game. This game teaches the concept of the “Pattern Core” (the smallest unit that repeats), I have built a visual game. In this game, players see a sequence of emojis and must identify exactly which sequence of 2, 3, or 4 items is the repeating “engine” of the pattern. Scroll down the page for a more detailed explanation.

How to play the Repeating Patterns Game
Analyze the Sequence
At the top of the screen, youβll see a row of 12 emojis. This is the full sequence. Somewhere within those 12 symbols is a smaller unit that is simply repeating over and over.
Find the “Reset” Point
To find the core, look at the very first emoji. Then, scan to the right until you see that exact same emoji again.
The Theory: Every time that first emoji reappears, it might be the start of a new loop.
The Trap: In the Advanced version, the first emoji might appear inside the core too! (Example: π-π-π). Always check if the entire unit repeats perfectly.
Identify the “Core”
The Core is the shortest possible unit that makes up the pattern.
If the sequence is π-π-π-π-π-π…, the core is π-π-π.
The game gives you four buttons at the bottom. Warning: Several buttons will start with the same emoji to test if you are paying attention to the symbols that follow.
Validate and Move On
Click a button: If you are right, the button turns Green and says “CORE IDENTIFIED.” If you are wrong, it turns Red.
Next Pattern: Once you’ve found the core, click the blue button at the bottom right to generate a completely new random sequence.
A streak counter to the header that tracks your consecutive correct answers. To make it more engaging, the “Next Pattern” button is now disabled until you find the correct core, ensuring players actually complete the challenge before moving on. If you click a wrong answer, the streak resets to zero.
What is a repeating pattern?
A repeating pattern is a sequence where a specific group of elements (the core) reappears over and over again in the exact same order.
In mathematics and logic, identifying these patterns is the first step toward understanding functions and algebraic thinking.
The Anatomy of a Pattern
Every repeating pattern consists of two main parts:
The Core (The Unit): This is the smallest set of items that repeats. If the pattern is π΄π΅π΅π΄π΅π΅, the core is π΄π΅π΅.
The Terms: These are the individual items within the pattern. In the example above, π΄ is the first term, and π΅ is the second and third term.
Common Pattern Types
Patterns are often categorized using letters to represent the relationship between the items:
AB Patterns: Two alternating items (e.g., ππππ).
ABC Patterns: Three different items in a row (e.g., π΄π΅π’π΄π΅π’).
AAB or ABB Patterns: One item followed by a double of another (e.g., πΆπΆπ±πΆπΆπ±).
How to “Decode” a Pattern
To understand a repeating pattern, you have to find the point where it starts over.
Look at the first item: Call this “A."
Move to the right: Keep moving until you see “A” again.
Test the loop: Check if the items following the second “A” are the same as the items that followed the first “A."
Define the Core: Once you find the segment that repeats perfectly, you have found the core.
