This Plot Opposites Game/Worksheet is a great way to put your skills to the test in a fun environment. By practicing, you’ll start to work out the answers efficiently.
Plot Opposites Game
In this game, your goal is to master the concept of Symmetry and Additive Inverses. Think of the number line as a giant balance scale centered at zero. Scroll down for a detailed explanation.
How to Play the Plot Opposites Game
Identify the Target: Look at the top of the card. The game will show you a target number (e.g., -7). On the number line, this target is marked by a gray pulsing circle.
Find the Opposite: Your job is to find the “mirror image” of that number. If the target is negative, its opposite is positive. If the target is positive, its opposite is negative.
Position Your Marker: Move your mouse (or finger) along the number line. The orange circle is your marker. It will “snap” to the closest whole number.
Strike: Once you are hovering over the correct opposite, click the STRIKE! button.
Mirroring Zero The “opposite” of a number is always the same distance from zero, just in the other direction. Example 1: If the target is 4, you move 4 spaces to the left of zero to find -4. Example 2: If the target is -9, you move 9 spaces to the right of zero to find 9.
The dashed vertical line in the center of the game represents this “mirror” at zero. If you could fold the screen along that dashed line, the target and your orange marker should land exactly on top of each other.
How this game teaches “Opposites” In mathematics, the opposite of a number is technically called its Additive Inverse. This game builds that intuition through three visual and logical cues:
Equal Distance from Zero: Students see that if the target is at +7, they must move 7 units in the other direction. This reinforces that |x| = |-x|.
The Mirror Line: The dashed line at zero acts as a “reflection point.” This helps students visualize that negatives aren’t just “smaller numbers,” but a symmetrical reflection of the positive world.
The Zero Sum Property:
While not shown as an equation in the game, it teaches the foundation for x + (-x) = 0. By finding the opposite, you are essentially finding the number needed to “cancel out” the target and return to zero.
