How to find the whole in a percent problem
To identify the part and whole in a percentage, look for keywords: “is” is usually the part, and “of” is usually the whole. The part is the quantity you are looking for, while the whole is the total amount, and the percent is the value out of 100.
You can use the formula
Part = Percentage/100 × Whole.
to solve for the missing value.
Steps

  1. Identify the “part” and the “percentage."
  2. Divide the part by the percentage. Perform the division to get a decimal result.
  3. Multiply by 100. Multiply the decimal from the previous step by 100.
  4. If the result is not a whole number, you can round it.

In this game, the numbers are all whole numbers simplifying the division.

Example
Problem: “12 is 60% of what number?” or “60% of __ = 12” or “60% of what is 12?”.
Step 1: The part is 12 and the percent is 60%.
Step 2: 12 ÷ 60 = 0.2
Step 3: 0.2 × 100 = 20
Answer: 60% of 20 = 12
