This PEMDAS (Steps) Game/Worksheet is a great way to put your skills to the test in a fun environment. By practicing, you’ll start to work out the answers efficiently.
PEMDAS (Steps) Quiz/Game
Welcome to PEMDAS Steps. This game is designed to help you internalize the Order of Operations (PEMDAS) by forcing you to solve equations one logical layer at a time. Instead of just jumping to the final answer, you must prove you know what happens first. You need to rewrite the expression for each step of the calculation. Scroll down the page for a more detailed explanation.
Check out the following Order of Operations Games/Quizzes for the complete PEMDAS series.
How to play the PEMDAS (Steps) Game
The PEMDAS Rulebook
You must follow this specific hierarchy. The game looks for the highest priority operation remaining in the line:
| Priority | Operation | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| 1. P | Parentheses | Look for ( ). If there are nested brackets, solve the innermost set first. |
| 2. E | Exponents | Solve powers like 23 (8). In the game, use the ^ symbol. |
| 3. M / D | Multiplication / Division | These are equal. Solve whichever comes first from Left to Right. |
| 4. A / S | Addition / Subtraction | These are also equal. Solve from Left to Right. |
How to Input Your Steps
Here is how to format your answers:
Don’t skip ahead: Only resolve one operation per step.
Keep the rest: Rewrite the parts of the equation you haven’t solved yet.
Symbols: You can use * for multiplication and / for division. Use ^ for exponents (e.g., 2^3).
Example Walkthrough:
Current Line: 10 + (2 * 32)
Step 1: Look inside parentheses. Inside, we have multiplication and an exponent. Exponent wins.
You type: 10 + (2 * 9)
Step 2: Still have parentheses. Solve the multiplication.
You type: 10 + 18
Step 3: Parentheses are gone. Solve the final addition.
You type: 28
Game Modes
Power Play: Focuses on exponents. It’s the best way to practice recognizing that 5 * 2^2 is 5 * 4, not 10^2.
Nested Layers: You start at the very center of the brackets and work your way out.
Mixed Mode: Randomly throws different structures at you to test your mental flexibility.
