How to solve one-step inequalities using addition & subtraction?

There are two sets of solving one-step inequalities worksheets (using addition & subtraction).

  • Solve 1-step inequalities using addition or subtraction (positive answers).
  • Solve 1-step inequalities using addition or subtraction (include negative answers).

These are the steps to solve one-step inequalities:

  1. Isolate the variable. This means getting the variable by itself on one side of the inequality. You can do this by adding, subtracting, multiplying, or dividing both sides of the inequality by the same number, as long as you do it to both sides.
  2. Remember the sign change rule. When you multiply or divide both sides of an inequality by a negative number, you have to flip the direction of the inequality symbol. For example, if you start with an inequality like x > 3, and you multiply both sides by -2, the inequality becomes x < -6.

For example,
Original inequality: x + 2 < 7
Isolate the variable: x < 7 - 2
Simplify: x < 5
