Multiply Fractions using Area Models Worksheets

Free printable and online math worksheets to help you learn how to multiply a fraction by a fraction using the area model and relating it to the multiplication sentence. You can either print the worksheets (pdf) or practice online.

How to multiply fractions using the area model?
Multiplying fractions using models involves visualizing the fractions as parts of a whole and then combining those parts to find the product.

Steps to Multiply Fractions Using Models:

  1. Draw a rectangle and divide it into columns. The denominator in the first factor represents how many columns to draw, and the numerator represents how many columns to shade.
  2. Divide the rectangle into rows. The denominator in the second factor represents how many rows to draw, and the numerator represents how many rows to shade.
  3. The number of parts that are shaded twice represents the numerator for the product. The total number of parts in the rectangle represents the denominator for the product.
  4. If possible, simplify the fraction representing the product by reducing it to lowest terms.

Practical Application:

  1. Understanding the relationship between multiplying fractions using models and conventional multiplication helps reinforce the concept of fractions as numbers and provides a visual aid for solving fraction multiplication problems.
  2. It also provides insight into why the conventional multiplication algorithm for fractions works the way it does, by relating it to the visual representation provided by models.
