Multiply by 2 by Whole Tens Quiz/Game
You can multiply 2 by a whole ten (a number like 10, 20, 30, etc.) by using a simple two-step mental math strategy. This method works because of the associative property of multiplication, which allows you to group factors in different ways. Scroll down the page for a more detailed explanation.

This game gives you a multiplication problem where the multiplier is a 2 and the multiplicand is a whole tens, for example 90 × 2. You can set the maximum multiplicand to adjust the difficulty. It will also include a timer, a scoring system, and clear feedback to help you master this skill.

How to multiply 2 by whole tens using mental math
The two-step mental math strategy

  1. Multiply the non-zero digits.
First, ignore the zero in the whole ten and multiply the single-digit numbers. For example, if you are multiplying by 20, you would first multiply by 2.
  2. Add a zero to your answer.
Because you initially ignored the zero from the whole ten, you must now add it back to the product to shift its place value correctly

    To calculate 2 × 80:
    Multiply the non-zero digits: 2 × 8=16.
Add a zero: Add the zero from 80 to get 160.
    So, 2 × 80=160
