How to Play the Multi-Step Fraction Action Game

  1. Look at the Problem: Read the problem carefully. Solve it and select one of the answers.
  2. Check Your Work: If you selected the right answer, it will be highlighted in green. If you are wrong, it will be highlighted in red and the correct answer will be highlighted in green. A hint will be given to help you find the correct answer.
  3. Get a New Problem: Click “Next Problem” for a new problem.
    Your score is tracked, showing how many you’ve gotten right.
  4. Finish Game When you have completed 10 questions, your final score will be displayed.

How to Solve Multi-Step Fraction Word Problems
Multi-step problems require you to perform one or more intermediate operations before getting the final answer.

Strategy: The “Bridge” Method
Identify Step 1: What info is missing? (e.g., “How much is left?” or “What is the total amount?”)
Identify Step 2: What do I do with that new number? (e.g., “Divide it into bags” or “Give half away.”)

Pattern A: Multiplication then Division
Common scenario: You make a large total amount, then split it into smaller portions.
The Problem:
A chef makes 12 gallons of soup. He uses \(\frac{2}{3}\) of it for a lunch special. He then pours the lunch special soup into bowls that hold \(\frac{1}{4}\) gallon each. How many bowls can he fill?
Step 1 (Multiplication): Find the total amount used for the special.
\(\frac{2}{3}\) of 12 \(\rightarrow \frac{2}{3} \times 12 = 8\) gallons.
Step 2 (Division): How many \(\frac{1}{4}\) bowls fit into those 8 gallons?
\(8 \div \frac{1}{4} \rightarrow 8 \times \frac{4}{1} = \mathbf{32}\) bowls.

Pattern B: Subtraction then Multiplication
Common scenario: You use some of a total, then take a fraction of what is left over.
The Problem:
Sarah had $60. She spent \(\frac{1}{3}\) of it on a book. She then spent \(\frac{1}{2}\) of the remaining money on lunch. How much did lunch cost?
Step 1 (Finding the Remainder):
Book cost: \(\frac{1}{3} \times 60 = \$20\).
Remaining money: $60 - 20 = $40.
Step 2 (Multiplication): Find \(\frac{1}{2}\) of the remainder.
\(\frac{1}{2}\) of \(\$40 \rightarrow \frac{1}{2} \times 40 = \mathbf{\$20}\) for lunch.

Pattern C: Division then Multiplication (The “Unit Rate” Problem)
Common scenario: Finding the total from a part, then finding a different part.
The Problem:
\(\frac{3}{4}\) of a container of juice is 15 ounces. How many ounces are in \(\frac{1}{5}\) of that same container?
Step 1 (Division): Find the full container size (Total รท Fraction).
\(15 \div \frac{3}{4} \rightarrow 15 \times \frac{4}{3} = \frac{60}{3} = 20\) ounces.
Step 2 (Multiplication): Find \(\frac{1}{5}\) of the full container.
\(\frac{1}{5} \times 20 = \mathbf{4}\) ounces.
