How to Play the Money Quest Game

  1. Look at the Problem: Read the problem carefully. Solve it and select one of the answers.
  2. Check Your Work: If you selected the right answer, it will be highlighted in green. If you are wrong, it will be highlighted in red and the correct answer will be highlighted in green. A hint will be given to help you find the correct answer.
  3. Get a New Problem: Click “Next Problem” for a new problem.
    Your score is tracked, showing how many you’ve gotten right.
  4. Finish Game When you have completed 10 questions, your final score will be displayed.
     

Solving Money Word Problems
Know Your Values
Before solving, you must know the decimal values of the coins:
Penny: $0.01
Nickel: $0.05
Dime: $0.10
Quarter: $0.25

The Three Golden Rules
Rule A: Line Up the Decimals
When adding or subtracting money, always align the decimal points vertically.
Rule B: Convert to Cents for Easy Math
If decimals confuse you, turn everything into cents.
Rule C: “The Change Rule”
When a problem asks for change, it is always a subtraction problem.
Formula: Money Given - Cost of Item = Change
Common Problem Types
Type 1: The Total Cost (Addition)
Problem: You buy a soda for $1.10 and chips for $0.85. What is the total?
Strategy: Combine the two values.
Math: 1.10 + 0.85 = 1.95.
Answer: $1.95.

Type 2: Finding Change (Subtraction)
Problem: A toy costs $3.50. You pay with a $5.00 bill. How much change do you get?
Strategy: Start with the money you handed the cashier and subtract the price.
Math: 5.00 - 3.50 = 1.50.
Answer: $1.50.

Type 3: The Multi-Step Quest
Problem: You have 3 quarters. You want to buy a candy bar for $$1.00$. How much more money do you need?
Find what you have: 3 × 0.25 = 0.75.
Find the gap: 1.00 - 0.75 = 0.25.
Answer: You need $0.25 (one more quarter).
