How to Convert Mixed Numbers to Decimals
Converting a mixed number to a decimal involves two-step process. You treat the whole number and the fraction separately, then combine them at the end.

Step 1: Keep the Whole Number
The whole number in a mixed number (the big number to the left) stays exactly the same. It will be the number to the left of the decimal point.
Example: In \(4\frac{3}{5}\), the 4 is your whole number. Your decimal will start with 4.

Step 2: Convert the Fraction
To turn the fraction into a decimal, remember that the fraction bar literally means “divided by.”
You divide the top number (numerator) by the bottom number (denominator).
Using our example: \(4\frac{3}{5}\).
Take the fraction: \(\frac{3}{5}\).
Divide: 3 ÷ 5.
3 ÷ 5 = 0.6.

Step 3: Combine Them
Add your whole number from Step 1 to your decimal from Step 2.
4 (Whole Number) + 0.6 (Decimal Part) = 4.6

Special Case: Non-Terminating Decimals
Sometimes, when you divide the fraction, the number goes on forever (like $1 \div 3 = 0.333…$). In these cases, you usually round to a specific place value, such as two decimal places.
Example: \(2\frac{2}{3}\)
Divide: 2 ÷ 3 = 0.6666…
Round to two places: 0.67.
Combine: 2.67.

Common Conversions to Memorize
Learning these “benchmarks” will make you much faster at math:
\(\frac{1}{2} = 0.5\)
\(\frac{1}{4} = 0.25\)
\(\frac{3}{4} = 0.75\)
\(\frac{1}{5} = 0.2\)
\(\frac{1}{8} = 0.125\)
