Metric Mass Conversion Game
In this Metric Mass Conversion Game, is designed to help you become an expert at metric weight conversions. Because the metric system is based on 1,000, the game is all about moving decimal points or adding/removing zeros. Scroll down for a detailed explanation.
How to Play the Metric Mass Conversion Game
The “Rule of 1,000”
In metric mass, every major jump is a factor of 1,000.
Kilograms (kg) → Grams (g): Multiply by 1,000 (Add three 0s).
Grams (g) → Milligrams (mg): Multiply by 1,000 (Add three 0s).
Milligrams (mg) → Grams (g): Divide by 1,000 (Move decimal 3 places left).
Grams (g) → Kilograms (kg): Divide by 1,000 (Move decimal 3 places left).
Kilograms (kg) → Milligrams (g): Multiply by 1,000,000 (Add six 0s).
Milligrams (mg) → Kilograms (g): Divide by 1,000,000 (Move decimal 6 places left).
The Strategy: “The Metric Staircase”
The metric system works in powers of 10.
Moving Up (Multiply)
If you are moving from a larger unit to a smaller unit, the number gets bigger.
1 kg → 1,000 g (Multiply by 1,000) (Add three 0s)
1 g → 1,000 mg (Multiply by 1,000) (Add three 0s)
1 kg → 1,000,000 mm (Multiply by 10)
Moving Down (Divide)
If you are moving from a smaller unit to a larger unit, the number gets smaller.
1,000 g → 1 kg (Divide by 1,000) (Move decimal 3 places left).
1,000 mg → 1 g (Divide by 1,000) (Move decimal 3 places left).
1,000,000 mg → 1 kg (Divide by 1,000,000) (Move decimal 6 places left).
Tip: The “Decimal Shift”
Multiplying by 10, 100, or 1,000? Move the decimal point to the right by the number of zeros (e.g., 5.2 × 100 = 520).
Dividing by 10, 100, or 1,000? Move the decimal point to the left (e.g., 450 ÷ 100 = 4.5).
