The Strategy: “The Metric Staircase”
The metric system works in powers of 10.
Moving Up (Multiply)
If you are moving from a larger unit to a smaller unit, the number gets bigger.
1 km → 1,000 m (Multiply by 1,000)
1 m → 100 cm (Multiply by 100)
1 cm → 10 mm (Multiply by 10)

Moving Down (Divide)
If you are moving from a smaller unit to a larger unit, the number gets smaller.
1,000 m → 1 km (Divide by 1,000)
100 cm → 1 m (Divide by 100)
10 mm → 1 cm (Divide by 10)

Key Conversion Cheat Sheet

From → To Operation Example
km → m Multiply by 1,000 5 km = 5,000 m
m → cm Multiply by 100 2 m = 200 cm
cm → mm Multiply by 10 8 cm = 80 mm
m → km Divide by 1,000 3,000 m = 3 km
cm → m Divide by 100 150 cm = 1.5 m

Tip: The “Decimal Shift”
Multiplying by 10, 100, or 1,000? Move the decimal point to the right by the number of zeros (e.g., 5.2 × 100 = 520).
Dividing by 10, 100, or 1,000? Move the decimal point to the left (e.g., 450 ÷ 100 = 4.5).
