This Metric Length Conversion Game/Worksheet is a great way to put your skills to the test in a fun environment. By practicing, you’ll start to work out the answers efficiently.
Metric Length Conversion Game
In this Metric Length Conversion Game, students must convert a given length into a different metric unit (e.g., changing kilometers into meters). Scroll down for a detailed explanation.
How to Play the Metric Length Conversion Game
Step 1: Choose Your Challenge
Pick one of the four modes from the main menu. Each mode focuses on a specific “jump” on the metric scale:
km and m: The big jumps (1,000 units apart).
m and cm: The medium jumps (100 units apart).
cm and mm: The small jumps (10 units apart).
Mixed Mode: A random mix of all of the above.
Step 2: Look at the Direction
In this game, you might be going down the stairs (multiplying) or up the stairs (dividing).
Check the units: Look at the top unit (what you have) and the bottom unit (what you need).
Decide the math:
Going Down (e.g., km to m): The number gets bigger. Multiply by 10, 100, or 1,000.
Going Up (e.g., m to km): The number gets smaller. Divide by 10, 100, or 1,000.
Step 3: Enter and Convert
Type your answer into the box.
Click the “Convert” button.
Watch your score:
The first number is how many you got Correct.
The second number is how many times you clicked Convert (Attempts).
Pro-Tip:
If you get an answer wrong, don’t just guess. Look at the units again. If you were supposed to multiply by 100 but only multiplied by 10, you’ll need to add one more zero.
The “Zero” Shortcut
Multiplying (Down): Move the decimal point to the right (or add zeros).
Dividing (Up): Move the decimal point to the left (or remove zeros).
The Strategy: “The Metric Staircase”
The metric system works in powers of 10.
Moving Up (Multiply)
If you are moving from a larger unit to a smaller unit, the number gets bigger.
1 km → 1,000 m (Multiply by 1,000)
1 m → 100 cm (Multiply by 100)
1 cm → 10 mm (Multiply by 10)
Moving Down (Divide)
If you are moving from a smaller unit to a larger unit, the number gets smaller.
1,000 m → 1 km (Divide by 1,000)
100 cm → 1 m (Divide by 100)
10 mm → 1 cm (Divide by 10)
Key Conversion Cheat Sheet
| From → To | Operation | Example |
|---|---|---|
| km → m | Multiply by 1,000 | 5 km = 5,000 m |
| m → cm | Multiply by 100 | 2 m = 200 cm |
| cm → mm | Multiply by 10 | 8 cm = 80 mm |
| m → km | Divide by 1,000 | 3,000 m = 3 km |
| cm → m | Divide by 100 | 150 cm = 1.5 m |
Tip: The “Decimal Shift”
Multiplying by 10, 100, or 1,000? Move the decimal point to the right by the number of zeros (e.g., 5.2 × 100 = 520).
Dividing by 10, 100, or 1,000? Move the decimal point to the left (e.g., 450 ÷ 100 = 4.5).
