The following diagram shows a multiplication trick for 2-digit numbers. It is sometimes called the “Cross-Multiplication” or “Vertical Crosswise Method”. Scroll down the page for more examples and solutions on how to use this multiplication short cut.

Multiplication Trick

Let’s say you want to multiply (AB × CD), where A, B, C, and D are the digits.

  1. (Units digit): Multiply the units digits: (B × D). Write down the units digit of the result and carry over the tens digit (if any).
  2. (Tens digit): Cross-multiply and add: (A × D) + (B × C) + (carry-over). Write down the units digit of this result and carry over the tens digit (if any).
  3. (Hundreds digit): Multiply the tens digits and add the final carry-over: (A × C) + (carry-over}. Write down this result.
