Solving Length Word Problems
Length word problems vary from simple one-step additions to complex multi-step conversions. Here are some examples categorized by the type of math skill they test.
Basic Addition and Subtraction (Comparing and Combining)
These problems use the same units and ask you to find a total or a difference.
Combining: “A car is 4 meters long and a boat is 8 meters long. How long are the car and boat altogether?"
Solution: 4 + 8 = 12 meters.
Comparing: “James is 100 centimeters tall and Johnny is 90 centimeters tall. How much taller is James than Johnny?"
Solution: $100 - 90 = 10 centimeters.
Missing Part: “A pencil is 10 cm long. An eraser is 5 cm shorter than the pencil. What is their total combined length?"
Solution: First find the eraser (10 - 5 = 5). Then add them: 10 + 5 = 15 cm.

Multi-Step Problems with Conversions
These are the most common “trick” problems. You must make the units match before you can do the math.
Metric Example:
“A board is 2 meters long. You cut off a piece that is 40 centimeters long. How many centimeters of the board are left?"
Step 1 (Convert): 2 meters = 200 cm.
Step 2 (Subtract): 200 - 40 = 160 cm.
Customary Example:
“Sara has 5 feet of fabric. She uses 56 inches to make curtains. How many inches of fabric does she have left?"
Step 1 (Convert): 5 feet × 12 inches/foot = 60 inches.
Step 2 (Subtract): 60 - 56 = 4 inches.

Multiplication and Division (Scaling and Sharing)
These involve repeated lengths or splitting a total length into equal parts.
Scaling: “A standard ruler is 12 inches long. If you line up 5 rulers end-to-end, what is the total length in inches?"
Solution: 12 × 5 = 60 inches.
Sharing: “A piece of ribbon is 150 cm long. If you cut it into 5 equal pieces, how long is each piece?"
Solution: 150 ÷ 5 = 30 cm.
Thickness: “A pile of 10 identical books is 20 cm high. What is the thickness of each individual book in millimeters?"
Step 1 (Divide): $20 cm ÷ 10 = 2 cm per book.
Step 2 (Convert): $2 cm × 10 = 20 mm.
