How to Play the Fraction Factory Game

1. Look at the Problem: Read the problem carefully. Solve it and select one of the answers.
   
2. Check Your Work: If you selected the right answer, it will be highlighted in green. If you are wrong, it will be highlighted in red and the correct answer will be highlighted in green.
   
3. Get a New Problem: Click “Next Problem” for a new problem.
   Your score is tracked, showing how many you’ve gotten right.
   
4. Finish Game When you have completed 10 questions, your final score will be displayed.
    
   

How to Solve Fraction Word Problems
The hardest part of fraction word problems is usually deciding whether to multiply or divide. Here is a guide to identifying the correct operation and solving the problem. When in doubt, try replacing the fractions with whole numbers in your head—if the problem sounds like multiplication with whole numbers, it will be multiplication with fractions!

Multiplication: “Part of a Part”
Multiplication is used when you are taking a fraction of another value.
Key Identifiers:

• The Keyword “Of”: In math, “of” almost always means multiply. (e.g., “\(\frac{1}{2}\) of the \(\frac{3}{4}\) acre”).
  
• Scaling: When you have a total amount and want to find what a specific portion of it equals.
  
• Repeated Addition: When you have a certain amount (like a recipe ingredient) and you are making multiple batches.
  
• Keywords: “of”, “times”, “area”, “product”
  
  Example:
  “A cake recipe calls for \(\frac{3}{4}\) cup of sugar. You want to make \(\frac{1}{2}\) of the recipe. How much sugar do you need?"
  Logic: You need \(\frac{1}{2}\) of \(\frac{3}{4}\).
  Equation: \(\frac{1}{2} \times \frac{3}{4} = \frac{3}{8}\)
  
  Division: “How Many Fit?” or “Sharing”
  Division is used when you are splitting something into equal groups or finding out how many times one thing fits into another.
  Key Identifiers:
  
• Splitting/Sharing: When you take a whole or a fraction and divide it among a number of people or containers.
  
• Measuring Out: When you ask, “How many \(\frac{1}{4}\) portions are in 5 wholes?"
  
• Keywords: “Cut into,” “shared equally,” “per portion,” “how many pieces."
  
  Example:
  “You have 4 pizzas and each person eats \(\frac{2}{3}\) of a pizza. How many people can you feed?"
  Logic: How many \(\frac{2}{3}\) fit into 4?
  Equation: \(4 \div \frac{2}{3}\)
  
  The “Keep-Change-Flip” Method (Division)
  To solve any fraction division problem, follow the KCF rule:
  Keep the first fraction exactly as it is.
  Change the division sign (÷) to a multiplication sign (×).
  Flip the second fraction (this is called the reciprocal).
