How to Solve Fraction Algebra Word Problems
Three Common Types of Problems
Type A: Finding the Part
Problem: “A recipe calls for 12 cups of flour.
If you only want to make \(\frac{1}{3}\) of the recipe, how much flour do you need?"
Equation: \(x = \frac{1}{3} \cdot 12\)
Solution: x = 4 cups.

Type B: Finding the Whole
Problem: “You ate \(\frac{2}{3}\) of a chocolate bar. If the piece you ate was $8$ squares long, how many squares were in the whole bar?"
Equation: \(\frac{2}{3}x = 8\)
Solution: Multiply both sides by the reciprocal (\(\frac{3}{2}\)): x = 8 \(\cdot \frac{3}{2} = 12\) squares.

Type C: Dealing with “The Remainder”
Problem: “A hiker has finished \(\frac{3}{4}\) of a trail. If he has 5 miles left to go, how long is the total trail?"
Logic: If he finished \(\frac{3}{4}\), then \(\frac{1}{4}\) of the trail is remaining.
Equation: \(\frac{1}{4}x = 5\)
Solution: x = 20 miles.

Step-by-Step Strategy
Follow this process to avoid getting overwhelmed by the text:

  1. Define x: Identify what the question is asking for (usually the “total” or “original amount”).
  2. Translate “Of”: Look for the word “of” to see what the fraction is being applied to.
  3. Check for “Left/Remaining”: If the problem gives you the amount leftover, make sure your fraction represents the leftover part.
Tip: If \(\frac{2}{5}\) is used, then \(\frac{3}{5}\) is left.
  4. Solve for x: Isolate x by multiplying by the reciprocal of the fraction.
