1. Slide
What it means: When you slide a shape, you just move it straight from one spot to another. It doesn’t turn, and it doesn’t flip over.
What happens to the shape? The shape stays exactly the same, just in a new place. It’s still facing the same way.
2. Flip
What it means: When you flip a shape, you make it look like it’s looking in a mirror. It’s like turning it over.
What happens to the shape? The shape is still the same size and shape, but it’s like a backwards copy. It’s facing the other way.
3. Turn
What it means: When you turn a shape, you spin it around a point. It changes which way it’s facing.
What happens to the shape? The shape stays the same size and shape, but it’s now facing a different direction.
When you Slide, Flip or Turn a shape, the shape itself never gets bigger or smaller. It stays the exact same size and shape. Only its place or how it’s facing changes.
Videos
Geometry Transformations
This is an educational video that shows students reflection (flip), translation (slide) and rotation (turn) in the form of a song and dance.
Slide to the right!
Translation
Turn it around!
Rotation
Flip it!
Reflection
When a transformation moves around, whether it is a Rotation (Turn), Reflection (Flip), or a Translation (Slide), it never changes its dimensions (or size).
Math Lesson Slides, Flips, and Turns
A first grade lesson in geometry utilizes math, literacy, and creativity to help students understand basic concepts.
Geometric Transformations (Math Song)
Hey! I gotta shape
And I want to transform it geometrically
But wait! When transforming that shape
There’s a few options that are available to me
Because I could…
Rotate - turn it ‘round
Translate - shift it left, right, up, or down
Reflect - copy it across an axis of symmetry
Hey! I gotta shape
It looks great but I want to tesselate it
That’s where, that shape
It fills up a flat space completely
With no overlaps or gaps
Rotate - turn it ‘round
Translate - shift it left, right, up, or down
Reflect - copy it across an axis of symmetry
