How to find the percentage of two numbers
To identify the part and whole in a percentage, look for keywords: “is” is usually the part, and “of” is usually the whole. The part is the quantity you are looking for, while the whole is the total amount, and the percent is the value out of 100.
You can use the formula
Part = Percentage/100 × Whole.
to solve for the missing value.
Steps

  1. Identify the “part” and the “whole."
  2. Divide the part by the whole. Perform the division to get a decimal result.
  3. Multiply by 100. Multiply the decimal from the previous step by 100 to convert it to a percentage.
  4. If the result is not a whole number, you can round it to 1 decimal place.

Example
Problem: “What percentage is 28.77 of 58?” or “28.77 = ___ % of 58” or “28.77 is what percent of 58?”.
Step 1: The part is 28.77 and the whole is 58.
Step 2: 28.77 ÷ 58 = 0.496
Step 3: 0.496 × 100 = 49.6%
Answer: 28.77 is 49.6% of 58
