Factor by Grouping Game
Factor by grouping is a technique used to factor polynomials with four terms, or polynomials where the leading coefficient (a) is greater than 1. The goal is to rearrange the expression into two pairs, pull out a Greatest Common Factor (GCF) from each pair, and find the common binomial factor. Scroll down for a detailed explanation.

How to Play the Factor by Grouping Game
In this Grouping Logic simulator, you are tasked with deconstructing a four-term polynomial into its final factored form. The game is divided into two stages.
Stage 1: GCF Extraction
Your first objective is to break the polynomial into two logical groups (already highlighted for you) and identify the Greatest Common Factor (GCF) for each.
Group 1 (Left side):
Look at the first two terms. Find the largest number and the highest power of x that divides into both.
Example: For 6x2 + 4x, the GCF is 2x.
Group 2 (Right side):
Look at the last two terms. Find the constant (number) that divides both.
Tip: If the third term is negative, your GCF for Group 2 will almost always be negative. This ensures the remaining binomials match.

Stage 2: Final Synthesis
Once you successfully extract the GCFs, the game will show you the “Half-Factored” state. It will look something like this:
2x(3x + 2) + 5(3x + 2)
Now, you must enter the two final binomial factors:
Factor 1: The “Shared” binomial (the stuff inside the parentheses).
Factor 2: The “External” binomial (created by combining the two GCFs you found in Stage 1).
In the example above, you would type 3x+2 and 2x+5 into the boxes.

Controls & Syntax
No Spaces: Type your answers clearly without spaces (e.g., 2x+3 instead of 2x + 3).
Order Independence: In the final stage, it doesn’t matter which factor you put in the first box and which you put in the second.
Score Tracking: Your “Sync Status” (Score) is updated in the top right. “Extraction Error” means your GCF math is off; “Invalid Final Form” means your binomial grouping is incorrect.
