Understanding Decimal Word Problems
A one-step decimal word problem is a math story that requires a single operation (addition, subtraction, multiplication, or division) involving numbers with decimal points to find the answer.

The Strategy: Read, Identify, Operate
Read: Visualize the scenario. Is something being added to a pile? Is something being shared?
Identify Clue Words: Look for “keywords” that signal which math operation to use.
Operate: Set up the decimal calculation, making sure to align your decimal points for addition/subtraction.

Choosing the Right Operation
Addition (+)
The Goal: Combining two or more amounts to find a total.
Clue Words: Total, sum, altogether, combined, increased by, “How much in all?"
Example: “A ribbon is 2.5 m long and another is 1.75 m. What is the total length?"
Math: 2.5 + 1.75 = 4.25 m

Subtraction (−)
The Goal: Finding the difference between two amounts or seeing what is left over.
Clue Words: Difference, remaining, left, decreased by, “How much more/less?”, “How much further?"
Example: “You have $20.00 and spend $14.50. How much is left?"
Math: 20.00 - 14.50 = 5.50

Multiplication (×)
The Goal: Finding the total of several equal-sized groups.
Clue Words: Product, total (when groups are equal), “of” (in the context of decimals), “at a rate of."
Example: “One apple weighs $.15 kg. What is the weight of 6 apples?"
Math: 0.15 × 6 = 0.9 kg

Division (÷)
The Goal: Splitting a total into equal groups or finding the size of one group.
Clue Words: Each, per, share, split, distribute, “How many times does [x] fit into [y]?"
Example: “A 1.5 L bottle of juice is split into 3 glasses. How much is in each?"
Math: 1.5 ÷ 3 = 0.5 L
