Understanding Decimal Word Problems
A 2-step decimal word problem usually asks you to combine parts and then find a difference (or vice versa). To solve these, you need to identify the “hidden” question that must be answered before you can find the final result.

The Logic Flow: Add then Subtract
The most common version of this problem follows a “Shopping Trip” logic:
Step 1 (Addition): Find the total of what was spent or collected.
Step 2 (Subtraction): Take that total away from a starting amount.

Example Problem
“Liam had a $1.5$ meter long wooden board. He cut off a piece that was 0.45 meters long and another piece that was 0.32 meters long. How much of the board is left?"
Step 1: Find the “Sub-Total” (Addition)
Before we can know how much is left, we have to know the total amount removed.
The Calculation:
$$0.45\text{ m} + 0.32\text{ m} = 0.77\text{ m}$$
Why? We are grouping the two smaller pieces together to see the “total loss."
Pro Tip: Always align the decimal points vertically when adding!

Step 2: Find the Remainder (Subtraction)
Now we take the original length and subtract the total we found in Step 1.
The Calculation:
$$1.50\text{ m} - 0.77\text{ m} = 0.73\text{ m}$$
Note: We add a “placeholder zero” to $1.5$ to make it $1.50$ so it’s easier to subtract $0.77$.
