Counting-On Game
To play the Counting On game effectively, you have to break the habit of “counting from one.” It is a mental shortcut that makes addition faster and prepares you for more advanced math. Scroll down the page for a more detailed explanation.

How to Play the Counting-On Game

  1. Find the “Big” Number Look at the two numbers you are adding. It doesn’t matter if the bigger number comes first or second—your starting point is always the larger value. Example: For 3 + 8, your starting number is 8. Why? It’s much easier to count 3 steps from 8 than it is to count 8 steps from 3.
  2. “Lock” the Big Number Imagine “locking” that big number in your head. You don’t need to count it out (1, 2, 3…). You already know it’s there. Say it out loud once to set your floor.
  3. Count the “Steps” Forward Now, look at the smaller number. This is the number of “steps” or “dots” you need to move forward. Start counting from the next number after your big number. If the problem is 8 + 3: Start: 8 Step 1: “9” Step 2: “10” Step 3: “11”
  4. The Landing is the Answer The very last number you say is your total. In the example above, you landed on 11, so 8 + 3 = 11.

Game Controls In the game: The Display: You will see a large number in Indigo (the base) and a small number in Rose (the steps). Visual Aid: Small dots appear below the numbers. These represent your “steps.” Interaction: Tap the dot as you count out loud to keep your place. Selection: Click the button that matches the number you “landed” on.

The video gives a clear, step-by-step approach to walk through the process of counting-on.
