Compare fractions (same denominator) Quiz/Game
To compare fractions with the same denominator, look at the numerators: the fraction with the larger numerator is the greater fraction because it represents more of the equal-sized pieces of the whole. Scroll down the page for a more detailed explanation.

This game will show two fractions with the same denominator and ask you to select either the larger or smaller fraction. Fraction bars will also be shown to help reinforce the concept. It will also include a timer, a scoring system, and clear feedback to help you master this skill.

How to compare fractions with the same denominator using models
Steps for Comparison

  1. Identify the Denominator:
Confirm that the denominators are the same. The visual fraction bars represent the same denominator by having the same number of total of equal parts.
  2. Observe the Shaded Parts:
Notice how many parts are shaded for each fraction bar.
  3. Compare the Numerators:
The numerator (the top number) tells you how many parts are shaded. The fraction with the larger numerator has more shaded pieces and is therefore the bigger fraction.
  4. Write the Comparison:
Use the correct comparison symbol (<, >, or =) to show the relationship between the two fractions. For instance, since 5 is greater than 3, 5/8 is greater than 3/8, which you would write as 5/8 > 3/8.
