How to Solve Age Word Problems
Make a Table
The most reliable way to solve these is to create a table. This ensures you don’t forget to add or subtract years from every character involved.
Example Scenario: “A father is 30 years older than his son. In 5 years, he will be 4 times as old as his son."
| Table | ||
|---|---|---|
| Character | Current Age | Age in 5 Years |
| Son | x | x + 5 |
| Father | x + 30 | (x + 30) + 5 |
Translating English to Math
Look for these specific keywords to build your equation:
“Is / Will be / Was”: These are your Equals sign (=).
“Times as old as”: This is Multiplication. (×)
“Older than / Senior to”: This is Addition (+).
“Younger than / Junior to”: This is Subtraction (-).
“Sum of their ages”: Add the two current age expressions together.
Step-by-Step Walkthrough
Let’s solve the example from above: In 5 years, the father will be 4 times as old as his son.
Identify the variables:
Son’s current age: x
Father’s current age: x + 30
Set up the future expressions:
Son in 5 years: x + 5
Father in 5 years: x + 35
Create the Equation:
Father’s Future Age = 4 × (Son’s Future Age)
x + 35 = 4(x + 5)
Solve for x:
x + 35 = 4x + 20
35 - 20 = 4x - x
15 = 3x
x = 5
Answer the question:
The son is 5 and the father is 35.
