Scroll down the page for a more detailed explanation.

In this game, you will practice adding a 3-digit number and a 1-digit number. The addition may or may not require regrouping. It will also include a timer, a scoring system, and clear feedback to help you master this skill.

How to “Add a 3-Digit Number to a 1-Digit Number”
Method 1: Mental Math (No Regrouping)
Use this method when the sum of the two Ones digits is 9 or less (meaning you don’t need to carry over).
Example: 532+6

  1. Identify the Places: In the problem 532+6:
    The Hundreds digit is 5.
    The Tens digit is 3.
The Ones digits are 2 and 6.
  2. Add the Ones Digits: Since the 1-digit number (6) is only in the Ones column, you only add the two Ones digits together:
    2+6=8
  3. Combine and Solve: The Hundreds digit (5) and the Tens digit (3) don’t change because we didn’t carry anything over. You just replace the old Ones digit (2) with the new sum (8).
    Answer: 538

Method 2: Standard Algorithm (With Regrouping)
Use this method when the sum of the two Ones digits is 10 or more. When this happens, you have to regroup (or “carry”) that extra ten into the Tens column.

  1. Set Up the Problem: Write the numbers vertically, lining up the place values. Since 8 is a single digit, it lines up only under the 7 (the Ones place).
  2. Add the Ones and Regroup: Add the numbers in the Ones column: 7+8=15.
  3. Add the Tens: Now, add the numbers in the Tens column, remembering to include the small 1 you carried over:
  4. Add the Hundreds: Finally, look at the Hundreds column. There are no other numbers to add, so you just bring it down.
    Answer: 465
