This Adding Integers Game/Worksheet is a great way to put your skills to the test in a fun environment. By practicing, you’ll start to work out the answers efficiently.
Adding Integers Game
This game is designed to help you visualize how integers combine using arrows on the number line that show both direction and distance. Scroll down for a detailed explanation.
How to Play the Adding Integers Game
Choose Your Difficulty
When you first open the game, select one of the four modes:
Same Signs: Both numbers are either positive or negative (e.g., -5 + -3).
Different Signs: One positive and one negative (e.g., -10 + 4).
Mixed Practice: A random combination of the above.
Expert (No arrows): The arrows are not shown. You must calculate the sum in your head.
Solve the Expression
Look at the top of the card. You will see an expression like:
(-6) + (-4) =
Use the Visual Aid (Standard Modes)
In the non-expert modes, watch the number line as the problem loads:
The Gray Arrow: Shows the first move. It starts at 0 and goes to the first number.
The Purple Arrow: Shows the second move. It starts where the gray arrow ended.
If the second number is positive, it points Right.
If the second number is negative, it points Left.
Key in Your Answer
Type your result into the box with the “?”.
Tip: Use the minus sign - on your keyboard for negative answers.
Press Enter or click “Check Result” to submit.
Strategies: The “Arrow Logic”
When Signs are the Same
The arrows point in the same direction. They “pile up” or accumulate.
Logic: Just add the two numbers together and keep the original sign.
Example: -3 + -5. Both move left. Total = -8.
When Signs are Different
The arrows point in opposite directions. This is a “Tug-of-War."
Logic: Find the difference between the two numbers (Subtract the smaller from the larger). The “stronger” number (the one further from zero) decides the final sign.
Example: -10 + 4. The gray arrow goes to -10. The purple arrow pulls back 4 units toward the right. You stop at -6.
Expert Mode Tips
Since the arrows are invisible, try to “see” them in your mind’s eye using the number line ticks at the bottom of the screen.
