How to Play the “Add Whole Tens to a Number” Game
The game will show an addition equation with a whole tens and either a 2-digit or a 3-digit number. Your task is to find the sum.
Here’s how to play:

  1. Add to: Select either 2-digit number, 3-digit number or random.
  2. Timed Option: Check the timer if you want to enable the 60 second timer. Click “Start Game”.
  3. Look at the Problem: You will be given an addition equation.
  4. Enter Your Answer: Enter the sum.
  5. Check Your Work: Click the Check button (or press the Enter key). The game will tell you if you’re correct. If you are wrong, you will be shown the correct answer.
  6. Get a New Problem: Click the Next button for a new problem.
    Your score is tracked at the top, showing how many you’ve gotten right out of the total you’ve tried.

Steps to Add Whole Tens to a 2-Digit Number

  1. Identify the ones digit: of the 2-digit number.
  2. Identify the tens digit: of the 2-digit number.
  3. Add the number of tens: being added to the tens digit you identified in step 2.
  4. Keep the ones digit: from the original number the same.
  5. Combine the new tens digit: with the original ones digit to get your answer.
     

How to “Add Whole Tens to a 3-Digit Number”
Example: 231 + 40

  1. Identify the places: The digit ‘1’ is in the ones place, ‘3’ is in the tens place, and ‘2’ is in the hundreds place. The ‘4’ in ‘40’ is in the tens place.
  2. Add the tens: Add the tens digits: 3 + 4 = 7.
  3. Form the new number: Keep the ones and hundreds digits the same. The new tens digit is 7. So, 231 + 40 = 271.
     

Example with Regrouping: 278 + 50

  1. Add the ones: The ones digit stays the same (8).
  2. Add the tens: 7 + 5 = 12.
  3. Regroup: Since 12 is more than 9, write the ‘2’ in the tens place and carry the ‘1’ to the hundreds place.
  4. Add the hundreds: The hundreds digit in 278 is 2. Add the carried ‘1’: 2 + 1 = 3.
  5. The new number: The sum is 328.
