Add to the Next Ten Quiz/Game
Learning to “add to the next ten” is a useful strategy for mastering addition with two-digit numbers because it simplifies complex problems. The goal is to find the small number needed to get the current number up to the next multiple of ten (like 10, 20, 30, 40, etc.). Scroll down the page for a more detailed explanation.

In this game, you will practice finding the missing addend in an addition problem. The sum is a multiple of ten (like 10, 20, 30, 40, etc.) and you need to find the missing addend. It will also include a timer, a scoring system, and clear feedback to help you master this skill.

How to “Add to the Next Ten”

Step 1: Identify the Next Ten
Look at the number you are starting with and figure out the very next multiple of ten. You only need to look at the ones place to determine this.
    Example Problem: 76+__=80
    Starting Number: 76
Next Ten: The next multiple of ten after 76 is 80.

Step 2: Focus on the Ones Place
Now that you know your starting number (76) and your target (80), you can ignore the tens place for a moment and focus only on the ones place digits.
The ones digit in 76 is 6.
The ones digit in 80 is 0.
Your new, simpler question is: “How many more do you need to add to 6 to make 10?"
    This relies on your knowledge of number bonds to 10 (e.g., 1+9, 2+8, 3+7, 4+6, 5+5).

Step 3: Find the Missing Number
Since 6+4=10, the missing number is 4.
Since you only changed the ones place to get from 76 to 80, this missing number is your final answer.
    So, 76+4=80

Why This Strategy Is Important
This skill is the basis for the “Making a Ten” strategy in two-digit addition. For example, to solve 47+6, you would:
Complete 47 to the next ten (50) by adding 3.
Break 6 into 3+3.
47+3=50.
50+3=53.
By mastering this, you make complex addition much faster!
