Adding integers can be simplified by following a set of rules, which can help in quickly determining the sum without needing a number line. Here’s a guide to these rules:

Rules for Adding Integers
Same Sign Addition:
If both integers have the same sign (both positive or both negative):
Add their absolute values.
Give the result the same sign as the integers.

Different Sign Addition:
If the integers have different signs:
Subtract the smaller absolute value from the larger absolute value.
Give the result the sign of the integer with the larger absolute value.

These rules ensure that adding integers reflects the concept of moving on a number line. If the signs are the same, you move in the same direction (positive + positive = move right, negative + negative = move left), so the sum reflects the total movement. If the signs are different, you move in opposite directions, so the result considers the difference in movement and the direction dictated by the larger number.
