Absolute Values Quiz/Game
The absolute value of a number is its distance from zero on the number line and always positive (or zero). The fundamental rule is to complete every calculation inside the bars first. Scroll down the page for a more detailed explanation.
This game focuses on how to evaluate expressions with absolute values. For example, |-2 + 5| + 11. If you make a mistake, the game will show you the correct answer.

How to Play the Absolute Values Game
The game will challenge you to find the value for the expression with absolute values.
Here’s how to play:
Absolute Value
The absolute value of a number is its distance from zero on the number line. Since distance is always positive (or zero), the result of taking an absolute value is always positive (or zero).
Steps to Evaluate Absolute Value Expressions
Consider the example expression: ∣−7+3∣+8
Step 1: Calculate the Value Inside the Bars
Just as you would solve any operation within parentheses first, you must simplify the entire expression inside the absolute value bars.
∣−7+3∣+8
−7+3=−4
The expression becomes:
−4∣+8
Step 2: Take the Absolute Value
Now that you have a single number inside the bars, apply the absolute value rule: convert that number to its positive equivalent (its distance from zero).
∣−4∣+8
The distance of −4 from 0 is 4.
The expression becomes:
4+8
Step 3: Perform the Remaining Operations
Finally, finish the rest of the problem using standard arithmetic.
4+8=12
This video gives a clear, step-by-step approach to explain the absolute values.
