Dividing by a 2-digit number (like 12 or 25) follows the exact same DMSB (Divide, Multiply, Subtract, Bring Down) steps as a 1-digit number. The only difference is that you have to “guess and check” your multiplication a bit more.

3-Digit Divide by 2-Digit Game
In this Cookie Factory: Long Division Edition, you are the Lead Batch Packer. Your job is to take a large number of cookies and figure out how many boxes they fill and how many leftovers remain. Scroll down the page for a detailed explanation.

How to Play the 3-Digit Divide by 2-Digit Game
To play successfully, you need to master the layout of Long Division.

  1. Understand the Layout
The game uses a standard long division bracket. It is designed to help you visualize Place Value.
The Divisor (Outside): The number of cookies that fit into one box.
The Dividend (Inside): The total number of cookies you have in the batch.
The Quotient (Top): This is where you type your answer. You must split your answer into Tens and Ones.
The Remainder (Bottom): Any “leftover” cookies that didn’t make a full box.

  2. How to Process a Batch
Since you are dividing a 3-digit number, you follow the DMSB cycle (Divide, Multiply, Subtract, Bring Down). In this digital version, you will input the final result column by column.
    Let’s solve: 438 ÷ 12
    Step 1: Divide (D)
Look at the first two digits of your dividend (43). How many times does 12 fit into 43?
    Since 12 × 3 = 36 and 12 × 4 = 48 (too big!), it goes in 3 times.
Write 3 on top in the Tens place (above the 3).

Step 2: Multiply & Subtract (M & S)
Multiply: 3 × 12 = 36. Write 36 under the 43.
Subtract: 43 - 36 = 7.
Quick Check: Is your leftover (7) smaller than your divisor (12)? Yes! You can move on.

Step 3: Bring Down (B)
Bring down the next digit (8). Your new number to work with is 78.

Step 4: Repeat (DMSB)
Now, how many times does 12 fit into 78?
Guessing: 12 × 5 = 60, 12 × 6 = 72, 12 × 7 = 84 (too big).
Divide: It goes in 6 times. Write 6 on top in the Ones place.
Multiply: 6 × 12 = 72.
Subtract: 78 - 72 = 6.

The Result
You have no more numbers to bring down, so the number at the bottom is your Remainder.438 ÷ 12 = 36 R6

Tips for 2-Digit Division
Sketch a “Multiples Tower”: Before you start, write out the first 5 multiples of your divisor on the side of your paper (e.g., 12, 24, 36, 48, 60). This saves you from doing multiplication mid-problem.
Round to Estimate: If you are dividing by 29, think of it as 30. It makes it much easier to guess how many times it fits into a larger number.
The Subtraction Check: If you subtract and the result is larger than your divisor, your “Divide” number was too small. Increase it and try again.
