Long division for a 3-digit number is like following a recipe. You repeat the same four steps—Divide, Multiply, Subtract, and Bring Down — for each place value (Hundreds, Tens and Ones).
3-Digit Divide by 1-Digit Game
In this 3-Digit Expansion Pack of the Cookie Factory, the stakes are higher and the batches are bigger! You are now managing division that goes all the way into the hundreds. Scroll down the page for a detailed explanation.
How to Play the 3-Digit Divide by 1-Digit Game
To play successfully, you need to master the layout of Long Division.
Understand the Layout
The game uses a standard long division bracket. It is designed to help you visualize Place Value.
The Divisor (Outside): The number of cookies that fit into one box.
The Dividend (Inside): The total number of cookies you have in the batch.
The Quotient (Top): This is where you type your answer. You must split your answer into Tens and Ones.
The Remainder (Bottom): Any “leftover” cookies that didn’t make a full box.
How to Process a Batch
Since you are dividing a 3-digit number, you follow the DMSB cycle (Divide, Multiply, Subtract, Bring Down). In this digital version, you will input the final result column by column.
Step 1: The Hundreds
Look at the first digit. How many times does the divisor fit?
Example: If the batch is 347 and the box size is 4.
4 cannot fit into 3. You would put a 0 in the Huns (Hundreds) box.
Step 2: The Tens
Now look at the first two digits together (the Hundreds and Tens).
Example: 4 fits into 34 eight times (4 × 8 = 32).
Put an 8 in the Tens box.
Step 3: The Ones
Carry your mental “leftover” (2) over to the last digit (7) to make 27.
Example: 4 fits into 27 six times (4 × 6 = 24).
Put a 6 in the Ones box.
Step 4: The Leftovers
Subtract your last multiplication from your final working number.
Example: 27 - 24 = 3.
Put 3 in the Remainder box.
Pro-Tips for High Scores
Don’t skip the “0”: If the divisor doesn’t fit into the first digit, always put a 0 in the Hundreds box to keep the numbers aligned.
Check the Remainder: If your remainder is equal to or larger than your divisor, you could have filled another box. Go back and increase your quotient.
The Final Check: Before clicking “Check Batch,” quickly multiply your answer by the divisor and add the remainder.
Quotient × Divisor + Remainder = Dividend
