Understanding 2-Step Decimal Word Problems
A two-step decimal word problem is a math story that requires a two operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, or division) involving numbers with decimal points to find the answer.

The 4-Step Strategy

  1. Identify the “Hidden” Total: Most problems don’t give you the subtotal directly. Look for phrases like “each,” “per,” or “a dozen” to see if you need to multiply first.
  2. Highlight the Modifier: Look for the second action. Are you adding tax? Taking a discount? Sharing the cost?
  3. Align the Decimals: When adding or subtracting, always line up the decimal points.

    Common Patterns
Pattern A: The “Purchase & Discount”
Step 1: Multiply (Price × Quantity) to find the subtotal.
    Step 2: Subtract (Subtotal − Coupon/Discount).
Example: Buying 5 apples at $0.75 each with a $0.50 discount.

    Pattern B: The “Change Back”
Step 1: Multiply or Add to find the total cost of items.
Step 2: Subtract (Amount Paid − Total Cost) to find the change.
    Example: Buying a $4.50 sandwich and a $1.25 soda with a $10 bill.

    Pattern C: The “Shared Cost”
Step 1: Add items together to find the grand total.
Step 2: Divide (Total ÷ Number of People) to find the individual share.
Example: A dinner bill is $42.60 plus a $5.40 tip, split between 3 friends.
